Pune, located 170 kms south of Mumbai has been the cultural capital of Maharashtra since ages. With the rapid growth of IT and Auto sectors, Pune is now a bustling city. Three championship golf courses and the Osho Commune attract many golfing and neo-pilgrims visitors as well.
Very little appears to be known of the early period of the Poona Golf Course. The first recorded Captain of the Course was Mr. H.B. Clayton CIE, ICS in 1932. The first tournament played, as per available records, was the RWITC Cup in 1920, won by Mr. C.C. Ingles. The first record of Ladies playing on the course is the mixed foursome tournament held in 1924.
The Course eighty years ago resembled the links courses insofar as it was open and windswept without any trees. Now the course has lots of trees and is considered as one of the most challenging golf courses in the country with narrow fairways, tricky greens and surrounding trees.
In the year 1992, under the stewardship of Mr. Baba Kalyani and a new Golf Committee headed by Mr. Atul Kirloskar, this highly unsuitable piece of land was subjected to the knowledge of agronomy, geology, drainage, engineering and heavy construction all of which are a part of the Golf architect’s resources. After 2/3 years of planning and execution the relaid course was opened to the members as well as the public of the city of Pune.
The Golf course has managed to blend soil, water, fairways and greens, the course and its surroundings as naturally as possible into a combination pleasing to the senses and thrilling as well as challenging for the game of golf.
The Course is in the heart of the city and is spread over just 94 acres of land and hence is not very long. Most of the holes on this par-71 course yardage 6604 have been given interesting shapes. That has made it a thinking man’s course. The greens here are among the fastest in Asia.
A must for old time’s sake on a Golfer’s itinerary.
